He deludes himself and implants these fake and incorrect beliefs in the heads of his two sons, Biff and Happy. Willy Loman believes that to be "well-liked" is the most important factor to be successful and happy in life. These superficial qualities may cause short and temporary success but they cannot be foundations for a real and an everlasting success. Miller does not criticize the American Dream he discusses the correct ways to fulfill it without losing one's life. The beauty of the way by which Miller discusses the American Dream is that it is an objective discussion. Many people believed in this idea of the American Dream and they strived to attain business success and great fortune. The historian James Truslow Adams is the one who gave the notion of material success the name of the American Dream in his book Epic of America. The American Dream is a wide spread notion that emerged in the early twentieth century. The essential theme of the play is the American Dream. Miller was also inspired by another salesman and the suicide of two salesmen. Manny Newman was a successful businessman. Miller wrote this play by the inspiration of a coincident meeting with his Uncle Manny Newman whose name sound resembles that of Willy Loman the protagonist of the play Death of a Salesman. He was a famous writer and a controversial figure at his time because he wrote many plays, essays and screen plays, and he was widely known by his work the Misfits. Arthur Miller is considered one of the fathers of the American drama in the twentieth century. Death of a Salesman is a great play that was written by the great playwright Arthur Miller in 1948 and it was performed on the great Broadway Theatre in 1949.
